About Gaslamp Quarter
The Gaslamp Quarter refers to a historic district in the heart of San Diego, California. Although it occupies just 16 square blocks of space, it is a hugely popular and iconic destination in the city. It boasts nearly 100 historic buildings, dozens of international restaurants, music venues and more. In order to reach the Gaslamp Quarter, visitors can take the Metropolitan Transit System, or MTS, or the San Diego Trolley. Those driving by car should look for signs to Downtown San Diego and later to the Marina/Gaslamp Quarter.
The history of the Gaslamp Quarter starts as far back at 1867, when a man named Alonzo Horton decided to develop the area. It was a thriving destination until the beginning of the 20th century, when it was a place of urban decay. San Diego government programs in the 1980s and 1990s injected the necessary funds to transform the Gaslamp Quarter back into the popular historic area that it once was. Today, the Gaslamp Quarter is used as the location of many major festivals, musical performances, and cultural events throughout the year.
San Diego Street Scene
One of the most popular events held each year within the Gaslamp Quarter is the Street Scene Music Festival. The event was started in 1984 by a local San Diego resident at the same time that the government urban renewal projects in the area were taking place. At its peak, the Street Scene was a three-day festival of blues, rock, and alternative music featuring bands like R.E.M., Social Distortion, The Killers, The White Stripes, and Modest Mouse. Although the final Street Scene Music Festival was held in 2009, there are plans to bring back the annual event to the famed Gaslight Quarter in San Diego.
